2 May 2008 - District Cub Camp
On the Friday night, our team arrived to a packed campsite due to another 2 district camps taking place over the same weekend. In true scout style we unpacked and went to introduce ourselves. After meeting our neighbours and setting up our camp boundaries, our Olympic Village was created.
While supper was being served the cubs were divided into their teams for the weekend. We made sure that all Cubs made friends with different groups, as one of the Olympic Values is friendship.
Saturday...Let the games commence!
Leaders had prepared a number of bases, which included
• Athletics – where the cubs completed their Athletes Badge
• Pioneering/'Bomb' Disposal – where cubs were asked to undertake various team challenges.
• Bottle Rockets – where cubs enjoyed some 'explosive' fun!
• Communications – where cubs learnt techniques for sending/receiving information.
• Creativity – where all cubs contributed to two giant Olympic banners for the campfire and created their own personal flags for the procession.
Once all bases had been visited, Cubs enjoyed free time while leaders prepared the evening meal and events.

After a lovely evening meal all Cubs were asked to assemble ready for our procession and campfire. All were given their flags and a glow stick which created a truly electric atmosphere for our walk around the campsite, singing 'Everywhere we go'. Lets just say...if anyone in the area was sleeping, they weren't when we had finished! Cubs were chosen to carry the 'Olympic Torch' and the banners made at the creativity base, adding to our very own Olympic Ceremony. When we reached the Campfire circle, the group posed for photographs before settling for an awesome sing-song. We were told by one cub that “The best thing was the campfire, it was so wicked, it was the best thing ever and I've never had so much fun in my life.
After the tired cubs dragged themselves back to tents and dorms, leaders had time to relax and reflect on the days activities. Unlike Friday night all Cubs were in bed and asleep early...what a blessing! All too quickly Sunday arrived, but the fun wasn't going to stop there. The District Archery and Football competitions took place with all cubs participating. After some superb football, the 14th A team and the 26th were pitched against each other in a tense penalty shoot out to decide our champions. The teams matched each other goal for goal but eventually a winner was declared. Congratulations to the 26th! However, all was not lost for the 14th, as Jack Stephens managed to take first place over his fellow archers with some very accurate shooting in the Cub archery competition. Max Ferard of the 26th was second, and Chris Charlton of the 11th came third. Lunch took place in the form of a picnic, due to excellent weather and the need to clean the centre. We held a scouts own, announced the winners of the competitions, handed out awards for individuals who shone throughout the camp and gave all attendees our camp badge. Once all the bags were packed away and the last few tent pegs pulled out the ground, the groups made their way to the mini buses which were heading back to Darlington.
