26 Oct 2007 - Commondale Weekend
|
21st & 22nd Halloween Weekend
The 21st and 22nd had a joint weekend at Commondale at the end of October, stopping in the Jubilee Centre.
Cubs and Scouts were delivered to the site on the Friday evening for around 7.30pm, and everyone got settled into the accommodation. The Scouts had a wide game, and a suitably ‘Cub friendly’ movie was put on for anyone who wanted to watch it.
On the Saturday morning everyone got ready for a trip into Whitby, taking the train along the Esk Valley line, a journey of about 50 minutes. The train was packed, and more and more people got on at every station without anyone getting off. By the time the train got into Whitby it looked more like the London underground at rush hour, with people standing right along both carriages.
There was a lot to see in Whitby as it was Goth weekend, fitting in with our Halloween theme. The day included a walk up the 199 steps to the Abbey, a short boat trip, crazy golf, and a number of places selling rock, and doughnuts.
The late afternoon train took us back to Commondale; not quite as packed as the morning train but still very full. Is Whitby ever quiet?
After the youngsters had a bit of free time, we settled down to our Halloween dinner – a bit like a Christmas dinner, but with Halloween decorations.
On the evening we had a fire in the campfire circle in the quarry, and the Scouts finished the evening with a wide game before supper and bed.
On Sunday morning the Scouts were stirred up with a room inspection after breakfast, then they had some time for games and free time to visit the site shop before lunch.
Then it was time for a last tidy up and get thing packed into vehicles for the journey home. |
