On 11 June a small party of Scouts from the 21st Troop went on a hike, starting at Gunnerside in Swaledale.
On what was probably the hottest day of the year so far, the party set off up Gunnerside Gill (1&2), passing various remains of the lead mining that once took place there, including the dark arched entrance of a mine tunnel (3). From the mine entrance we took a path down into the bottom of the Gill and followed the stream up to the remains of a smelting mill.
Then climbing up out of the valley (4), we took a moortop track leading westwards over Ivelet Moor, where a cool breeze helped a little with the baking sun.
After stopping for lunch, we dropped down to the start of Swinner Gill, where the Scouts decided which route down into the valley we should take (5). We took the path that ran down the narrow steep sided valley of the Gill (6), crossed the stream around ½ way down (7), and followed the path down into Swaledale (8). The route down the Gill being made more interesting by the attack of an irate sheep that didn’t like us being there. After we had continued over a stile, it was still trying hard to get through the fence after us.
